A&P has filed layoff notices for more than 9,500 employees this week, effective starting Thanksgiving Day.
These layoffs affect 45 New Jersey stores and are part of A&P’s pending bankruptcy arrangements. While many of the company's stores are being sold to other retailers like Stop & Shop and Acme Markets, A&P already has plans to close 25 stores.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) requires by law that an employer file notices with Department of Labor, and A&P’s filing lists the effective layoff date as November 26, Thanksgiving Day. This comes just one month since A&P filed 867 layoff notices with an effective date of September 19, bringing the total number of employees affected in the state to more than 4,600.
Additionally, NJ.com reported more layoffs would be issued almost dobling the number, bringing the total to 9,515.
An A&P spokesman declined to comment to news source NJ.com about the layoff notices when asked on Friday, but the company has set up this website with updates about the bankruptcy and store sales.
