Specialty Food Association Announces 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Winners

Ramping up for the fast-approaching Summer Fancy Food Show next week, the Specialty Food Assocation (SFA) has announced the latest and greatest in its list of Lifetime Achievement Awards for 2016. 

“The Association’s Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize and celebrate the pioneers who helped launch and sustain the movement to elevate the foods Americans enjoy,” said Ron Tanner, Vice President of Philanthropy, Government, and Industry Relations, SFA, in a press release. 

The SFA will honor five special industry leaders in a ceremony on Monday, June 27, during the summer edition of the Fancy Food Show.

2015 Summer Fancy Food Show

Those selected were chosen by a special committee from the SFA. The industry pioneers to be honored are as follows:

Andrew Balducci, Balducci’s

Andrew Balducci, BalducciFormer owner of Balducci’s, Andrew Balducci was one of the first direct importers of Prosciutto di Parma to the U.S. Andrew is also credited with being amongst the first to enlist artisan bread bakers, having mozzarella made fresh, and continues to expand and innovate the reach and product offerings of Balducci’s New York City. 

Eunice and David Bigelow, Bigelow Tea

Eunice and David Bigelow, Bigelow TeaThis power duo laid the groundwork for the popularity explosion of the U.S. specialty tea market, following the lead of Ruth Bigelow’s Constant Comment Tea in 1945. The Bigelows currently serve as Co-Chairs of the company, and are also founding members of SFA (formerly known as National Association for the Specialty Food Trade). 

Daniel J. Carter, DCI Cheese

Daniel J. Carter, DCI CheeseWell renowned in the cheese industry for his work with the Purity Cheese Company to his own consulting firm, Dan Carter Inc., Carter is credited as the driving force behind the creation of the U.S. specialty cheese industry. Carter served as Chair of SFA (then NASFT) from 1972 – 1973, was dubbed Master Connoisseur of French Gastronomy in 1972, and also received IDDBA’s President Award. 

F. James McGilloway, The Gilway Co. 

Beginning in supermarket management, McGilloway made his mark in the specialty food industry building brand success for 25 years for Twinings Tea, Tobler Chocolates, Tiptree Preserves, and more, in addition to founding the Gilway Company in 1981. McGilloway also served as chair of SFA (then NASFT) from 1986 – 1988.

Joel Schuman, Source Atlantique

Joel Schuman, Source AtlantiqueFounding Source Atlantique as part of Food Import Group in 1991, Schuman maintained strong relationships with European suppliers, and raising brand standards to foreign manufacturers. Schuman’s business practices are credited with contributing to the overall growth of the specialty food industry.
