Beer and Cheese Pairings: Lone Pint Brewery's Yellow Rose

SACRAMENTO, CA

Welcome to this week’s Beer & Cheese Pairings. For this installment I’ve chosen three strong, flavor-forward cheeses to go head to head with Lone Pint Brewery’s hop heavy Yellow Rose. Let’s get started!

BEER:

Yellow Rose from Lone Pint Brewery is a flavorful SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) IPA. This beer uses whole cone Mosaic for bittering, flavoring and aroma while in the kettle and is also massively dry hopped. The hops impart strong grapefruit, pineapple, and blueberry flavor and aroma.

CHEESES:

Black Mountain is a delicious and creamy English cheddar from Somerdale Cheese made with a mixture of white wine, garlic and parsley. This cheese is equal parts strong and tasty with a sharp bite and a kick of garlic. It paired surprisingly well with the Yellow Rose, creating a playful mixture of sweet hops and savory herbs.

Camembert di Bufala from La Casera is a tasty DOP cheese, produced from raw buffalo milk in a small dairy in Piemonte, Italy. This rare cheese has an edible bloomy rind and supple, mild interior. It smells earthy but not strong and has a very clean and grassy flavor. This cheese paired beautifully with the beer, striking a nice balance with the hops making for my favorite pairing of the day.

Crushed Olives Log is a wonderful cheese from Laura Chenel. It is made with carefully harvested California green olives and ripe black Kalamatas that are lightly crushed and spiked with a hint of spice. The olives are combined with the company’s creamy fresh chèvre for a bright blend of tangy goat cheese and fruity olives. This cheese can be challenging to pair because of its decadent olive flavors, but I found that it was really complimented by the beer. The Yellow Rose’s hop-forward flavor profile and sweet tones balanced nicely with the tang of this cheese.

Be sure to check back next week for more delicious beer and cheese pairings.
