You can’t spell charity without cheese—or, at least, you can’t in my mind. Cheese itself is so giving: in flavor, in protein, and in deliciousness! Champignon North America must be thinking something pretty similar because the company is serving as a participating sponsor for the Walgreens Gridiron Grill-Off Food, Wine & Music Festival, a high-end culinary event founded by Miami Dolphins legend John Offerdahl and his wife, Lynn, to support Offerdahl’s Hand-Off Foundation.
As we move further into the prime season of giving, I tapped Flynne Wiley, CEO, to find out more about how Champignon is giving its all at this unique event.
“We are excited to connect with local chefs, retailers, and attendees at this year’s Gridiron Grill-Off,” Flynne told me. “In addition to food sampling, there will also be live music, a cornhole tournament, a barbecue competition, a tailgate zone, and a culinary ‘Grand Grill-Off’ where 22 high-end restaurants paired with 22 Miami Dolphin legends will grill up creative food for attendees to judge. We will be grilling up our Rougette Bonfire grilling cheeses as a focus item since these cheeses are a new and unique addition to tailgating and barbecue entertaining.”
With that much fun to be had in one afternoon, I asked Flynne if that’s what first made Champignon decide to join in the Gridiron Grill-Off. While she assured me that that was a factor, Flynne emphasized the importance of the Offerdahl’s Hand-Off Foundation’s mission.
“We value the foundation’s mission to feed the needs of those in crisis, particularly children in foster care and homeless agencies,” Flynne said. “With 100 percent of the proceeds from this event going to fund the foundation, we jumped on board. We have a strong customer base in South Florida, and this is our way of giving back to that community.”
And speaking of community, Flynne also noted how the physical act of grilling can bring a community closer together, another perk of both the event and Champignon’s grilling cheese line.
“We enjoy connecting with food lovers, whether it is a chef, retailer, or fan. The experience of gathering people together and enjoying good food and good company is the inspiration for the Rougette Bonfire brand,” Flynne explained. “A barbecue—whether at home or among a community—brings people together and warms the soul, and that’s the experience we aim to bring.”
If there are any South Florida retailers and foodservice operators with an open afternoon on Saturday, November 9th, pop by the Pompano Beach Amphitheater and join Champignon in supporting this great cause—with the added bonus of tasting some seriously great culinary delights! Tickets will be available at the door. General admission is $85 per guest, and VIP access is $125 per guest.
