The sofi™ Awards competition only happens once a year, and it sure does not disappoint. This year marks the 47th year the Specialty Food Association has recognized the best in the specialty foods industry, and the winner of the Best Cow’s Milk Cheese was none other than Epicure Foods’ CADI Urgèlia.

With the dedication and effort of its partners (farmers), workers, suppliers, and consumers, everyone comes together to create the CADI family."
Sold exclusively through Epicure, an importer and distributor of international and domestic gourmet products, the CADI Urgèlia brought home the Gold Award in the Best Cow’s Milk Cheese category as part of the Specialty Food Association’s (SFA) 2020 sofi Awards. Winning gold in any category is always an amazing feat, but this is considered a top honor in the $158 billion specialty food industry, according to the release.
"Epicure first began carrying Urgèlia in 2017 and its popularity in the U.S. market has significantly grown over the past few years. After winning this award, we are looking to see popularity and demand for the product grow exponentially," Colleen continued. "The Best Cow’s Milk Cheese category was introduced to the sofi Awards in the summer of 2017 and this is the first time a non-domestic cheese has come in first place."
The CADI Urgèlia was one of 148 winners selected by a panel of specialty food experts from nearly 2,000 entries across 39 product categories. Products are judged on taste, flavor, appearance, texture and aroma, ingredient quality, and innovation. All tastings are blind. This year, for the first time, sofi judging was held at the prestigious Rutgers Food Innovation Center following strict safety guidelines.
CADI Urgèlia is a traditional semi-soft specialty cheese from Catalonia with PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). All milk for Urgèlia cheese comes from the Frisona breed of cattle. Urgèlia is a washed rind cheese aged for a minimum of 45 days. An excellent melting cheese, CADI Urgèlia is best enjoyed melted on pasta dishes, pizza, crepes, or soups.
