This weekend, we’re celebrating those father figures in our life—which to The Cheese Professor means an opportunity to celebrate with cheese, and lots of it! But, what dairy products should retailers be stocking their cheese cases with ahead of this weekend? For The Cheese Professor’s Gordon Edgar, the answer was simple: Point Reyes Gouda from California cheesemaker Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese.
"Point Reyes Gouda, aged over 18 months, is a great California version of an aged Dutch cheese: sweet, sharp, and salty,” Edgar wrote in The Cheese Professor’s listicle titled, “10 Great Cheeses For Father’s Day.” “A dairy since the 1950's founded by their father Bob Giacomini, the dairy expanded into cheesemaking in 2000 to bring the daughters into the mix. That's not the usual way things go in the dairy world, but it sure is something a good dad would do."
This award-winning cheese is made from pasteurized, rBST-free cows’ milk for a creamy yet slightly crystalized texture with pops of complex flavor notes, including hazelnut, caramel, butterscotch, and cooked cream.
Because of these flavor notes, Point Reyes Farmstead envisions the perfect cheese board to include charcuterie novelties like hazelnuts, toasted almonds, and artisanal honey, all of which complement its Gouda. The cheesemaker also suggested Scotch, bourbon, sweeter white wines, and craft beers as but a few drink pairings. All of these pairing opportunities translate into the perfect in-store cross-merchandising strategies for retailers this weekend.
Congratulations to Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese for yet another stand-out season!
