A year ago, Savencia Cheese USA made a pledge to honor the memory of Dorothy Demeter. As the first woman to receive a dairy degree from Iowa State University, her legacy is known throughout the industry. Establishing a scholarship in her name, the Dorothy Demeter Savencia Cheese USA Undergraduate Scholarship was born.
“Today, we are proud to announce our first scholar has been elected,” stated Dominique Huth, President and CEO of Savencia Cheese North America Group, in a recent LinkedIn post. “Congratulations to Lindsey Bouska, who is majoring in Food Science."
Dorothy’s dedication to cheese, and specifically to soft cheese in the USA, is a true tribute to Savencia's roots, the post noted. It all began when her grandfather, Fred Kolb, settled in a small Midwest town in Illinois. There, in Lena, he opened a dairy operation named Kolb-Lena, which is now operated by Savencia Cheese USA.
"Lindsey grew up on a small dairy and crop farm in Iowa, and like Dorothy always had a strong interest in dairy," continued Huth, highlighting the parallels between Lindsey and Dorothy. "Lindsey is the President of the Food Science Club, and plans on competing in the National Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest, among many other activities.”
Best of luck to Lindsey on her cheese journey!
