Organic dairy is getting a significant boost as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) injects $15 million into expanding its presence in schools and youth programs. This strategic initiative, championed by industry names like the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), aims to diversify dairy offerings and foster partnerships within the sector, paving the way for new growth avenues in the industry.

Rebekah Sweeney, Senior Director of Programs and Policy, Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association“Dairy Business Innovation Alliance grants have launched and grown all kinds of dairy businesses, and we value the trust USDA has placed in us to boost organic dairy processing as well. We see this funding as an opportunity to increase young Americans’ access to delicious, nutritious dairy and strengthen rural communities,” stated Rebekah Sweeney, WCMA Senior Director of Programs and Policy.

The funding will be distributed through cooperative agreements with Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives (DBIIs), including the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA) run by the Center for Dairy Research and WCMA. This initiative is poised to offer grants to organic dairy manufacturers before the end of the year, according to a press release.

The program's objectives extend beyond merely increasing consumption. It aims to diversify dairy products offered in schools and build robust partnerships among businesses involved in organic dairy production and distribution.

Since its inception in the 2018 Farm Bill, DBIA has made significant strides in supporting the dairy industry. The alliance has awarded 213 grants totaling more than $16.5 million, conducted market research and product development projects, and delivered direct technical assistance to Midwestern dairy farmers and processors.

This latest funding injection underscores the USDA's commitment to fostering innovation and growth in the organic dairy sector while promoting healthier food choices for America's youth.
