Open since 1996, Magnolia Bakery started on a quiet street corner in the heart of New York City’s West Village. Today, Magnolia Bakery can be found in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Mexico City, Tokyo, Moscow City, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Kuwait City, and Doha. I was even lucky enough to try the bakery’s famous Banana Pudding last week when I was in town for the Summer Fancy Food Show, and I must say, it was definitely worth visiting for!
Located in New York City’s Upper West Side, Levain is a cozy neighborhood bakery where you can see both loyal locals and tourists from all over. From its rustic breads to what it calls its World-Famous 6 oz Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie, everything is baked on-site and fresh daily. And even better, what the bakery doesn’t sell that day goes to help feed the hungry.

Founded by Eric Kayser in Paris in 1996, Maison Kayser is an authentic artisanal French Boulangerie, meaning that bread and other baked goods are mixed and baked on-site all day long. Recognized as one of the most talented artisan bakers of his generation, Eric uses what the company says are the most ancestral techniques to produce bread, including the use of liquid leaven, and innovation with the most high performance, modern, state-of-the-art bakery equipment.
Starting in 1997, in the basement of its namesake restaurant, Balthazar Bakery has now grown to be one of the city's biggest and most consistently excellent artisan bakeries. From the beginning, head baker Paula Oland has been the guiding force, the company says, now heading both a bakery in the city and a popular factory store in New Jersey. Stop by either location while you’re in town and be rewarded with some of the best bread in the city.
Inspired by Italian bakers and bakeries, Sullivan Street Bakery was founded in 1994 in the heart of New York City and later moved to Hell's Kitchen, where it remains an important local institution today. Known for its bread, Roman-style pizzas, and pastries, Sullivan Street Bakery has been a staple for 20 years. Founder Jim Lahey and his businesses have been featured in Vogue, Bon Appétit, The New York Times, the Martha Stewart Show, and NBC’s Today show.
