Joanne Chang Scoops Outstanding Baker Title in Coveted 2016 James Beard Awards, Winners Announced


CHICAGO, IL
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Commonly known in eatery circles as the Oscars of cuisine, this year’s James Beard Awards has crowned its victors as it celebrated the cream of cooking for their roles in creation, television, and media.

After having been nominated for the awards several times before, Joanne Chang was finally anointed Outstanding Baker for her driving work with her store, Flour Bakery + Café. Chang opened the first Flour location 16 years ago in South End Boston. Her other business, Myers + Chang, founded with her husband Christopher, was also nominated. 

Additionally recognized with the dustings of victory, was Dahlia Narvaez for Oustanding Pastry Chef. Narvaez is the executive pastry chef for L.A.-based Osteria Mozza.

Other noted victorious names to the deli and bakery world are as follows: 

  • Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits: Ron Cooper, Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal, Ranchos de Taos, NM
  • Outstanding Wine Program: Bern’s Steakhouse, Tampa, FL
  • Foundation Book Award for Baking and Dessert: Sourdough: Recipes for Rustic Fermented Breads, Sweets, Savories, and More – by Sarah Owens
  • Foundation Book Award for Beverage: The Oxford Companion to Wine – by Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding
  • Foundation Broadcast Media Award for Video Webcast, on Location: The Sushi Chef: Oona Tempest and Toshio Oguma
  • Foundation Broadcast Media Award for Visual and Technical Excellence: Chef’s Table

The awards were presented this past Monday, at a gala in Chicago.
