Way back in 2015, Wegmans announced its plans to open a new store in New York City, but now the project has finally come to fruition. On Sunday, October 27, the retailer will cut the ribbon at the new location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and open the doors to a one-of-a-kind shopping experience that blends grocery with foodservice. The new location has already developed substantial buzz, and locals are eager to uncover the store’s many offerings.
“We give our best to the customer every single time. Not just in the morning, not just on a good day,” Store Manager Kevin Cuff commented. “We want to be the best in the business when it comes to putting the customer first.”
The new 74,000-square-foot store will continue the brand’s commitment to offering fresh, high-quality ingredients, restaurant foods, incredible customer service, and consistent low prices. This store will be Wegmans’ 101st overall, and its 47th location in the state of New York, according to a press release.
Located at 21 Flushing Ave. in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the new store is well-positioned in the coveted New York City market. The retailer has hired over 540 new employees to man the store, and while the location will stock nearly 50,000 items—2,000 of which are organic—the store will also offer a wide selection of foodservice options.
A culinary staff of 157, led by Executive Chef Stephen De Lucia, will be serving up everything from authentic Italian pizza, fresh sushi, and delicious burgers, to hot soup and made-to-order salads. The store will also feature mix-and-match food bars for takeout or in-store dining with hot and cold self-serve stations featuring entrees and sides, homestyle and vegetarian options, and international cuisine. A Market Café located on the mezzanine-level has a seating area space for nearly 100 patrons, and includes a full bar serving beer, wine, cocktails, and snacks.
As retailers continue to evolve from strictly grocers, to comprehensive markets, is this the first store to take Wegmans in a new direction? Deli Market News will keep you updated.
