Don’t cut corners on pies, because there are no corners. The motto of Mike’s Pies out of Tampa, Florida, may be my latest holiday food mantra as we settle into a season that is incredibly pie-forward.
Mike Martin’s key lime pie faced off with Psomi’s Christina Theofilos and her signature spiced apple bougatsa pie in Good Morning America’s “United States of Pie” contest, with popular berry grower Wish Farms hosting the televised event and representing the Sunshine State.
“Wish Farms recently welcomed Good Morning America and host Gio Benitez to its campus in Plant City, Florida. The network used our annual Pixie Jungle as a backdrop to kick off its ‘United States of Pie’ tour as the show searched for the country’s best pie,” Nick Wishnatzki, Public Relations Manager for Wish Farms, commented.
Celebrities Titus O’Neil of WWE, Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays, and local DJ Joe Carballo judged their favorite between the two Tampa Bay area restaurant bakeries. In a tie-breaking vote, Glasnow cast the decisive decision in Mike’s Pies’ favor.
The winners of each region, which also included Denver, Boston, and Chicago, met up to compete in New York City on November 18, where Spinning J Bakery’s Dinah Grossman was crowned the champion of Good Morning America’s United States of Pie contest and a recipient of the $10,000 prize.
Meanwhile, the berry provider’s Pixie Jungle launched the season of giving with $640,000 raised, as reported by our sister publication AndNowUKnow.
