Welcome to this edition of Beer & Cheese Pairings. This week, I’ve gotten three equally delicious and diverse cheeses to pair with Snake River Brewing's nicely balanced Rolling Thunder Dortmunder. Let’s jump right in!
BEER:
Rolling Thunder Dortmunder from Snake River Brewing is a full flavored and refreshing beer. The main malt used in its creating is imported pilsner malt that is complemented by nice bitter German lineage hops, making for a nicely balanced beer. It should be a great partner for our three cheeses.
CHEESE:
Schloss is a pungent and robust Austrian style washed rind cheese from Marin French. This delicious cheese has a nice and smooth texture, which spreads nicely across a firm crostini. This was my favorite cheese of the day, but unfortunately it didn’t quite mesh with the malty tones of the beer.
Bay Blue from Point Reyes Cheese is a beautiful, rustic-style blue cheese. Reminiscent of Stilton, this cheese is aged 90 days and boasts a mild and mellow-blue mold flavor. It has slight earthy notes and a salted-caramel finish. Unlike the Schloss, this cheese paired nicely with the malt tones of the Dortmunder. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite balance with the hops.
Rumiano’s Aged Goat Cheddar is pale, mild and creamy, and made from raw goat milk. It isn’t sharp or tangy, but more straightforward with a very mellow finish. This cheese was fantastic on its own and made for the best pairing. It was able to walk the line between malt and hops for a very pleasant bite.
