Department of Dairy Science's Karen Nielsen Bestowed World Citizen Award

Heralding those who played distinguished roles in their commitment to local and global communities, the International Institute of Wisconsin recently anointed Karen Nielsen with its 2016 World Citizen Award.

Karen Nielsen, Director, Babcock Institute of International Dairy ResearchAwarded on Saturday, April 30, at the institute’s annual World Citizen Celebration Dinner, Nielsen was publically recognized for maintaining a leadership position in the institute’s formation, and continual promotion of international cooperation, and perpetuating a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural perspective. 

Nielsen has a rich history in cultural diversity and dairy professionalism which laid a deserving foundation for the award. Nielsen’s varied accomplishments are listed below:

  • Bachelor's Degree from St. Olaf College
  • Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota in Chinese language, history, and culture
  • Director of the Babcock Institute of International Dairy Research
  • Member of the Leadership Team of the UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science’s Nestle China Dairy Farming Institute project
  • Founder of Global Dairy Outreach LL, of the Babcock Institute

Throughout her professional endeavors, Nielsen has provided training to over 83 countries, initiated the development of multilingual educational materials, and formulated dairy research and outreach collaborations throughout the world, thus making her a worthy recipient of the worldly award.
