When it comes to olive oil, the market is pretty saturated. But when it comes to quality olive oil, the list gets narrowed down a bit. One company committed to quality is CHO America, the makers of Origin 846 extra virgin olive oil. I spoke with Dustin Gilman, Marketing and Social Media Manager, and he explained why the raw, unfiltered olive oil stands out above the rest.
“One of the aspects that makes Origin 846 unique is that it is decanted to eliminate unwanted sediment while retaining the original antioxidant and polyphenols benefits,” said Dustin. “So, why is that important? Essentially, when you have olive oils that are unfiltered, usually you'll see a bit of cloudiness, which is sediment on the bottom of the bottle. It's not unsafe, but the thing is when you have sediment in your olive oil, the likelihood that your olive oil will go bad quicker is higher, since sediments cause oxidization. Now, because our oil doesn't have any sediment in it and is unfiltered, a bottle of Origin 846 will last much longer on the shelf, which is pretty amazing.”
CHO America is the sole producer of Origin 846, with no blending of oils from different origins. The company oversees quality control from start to finish to ensure full traceability, cultivating its olives using sustainable farming methods and hand picking each olive. They pride themselves on producing a true “farm to bottle” first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Origin 846 easily stands out from the pack, with their 846 milliliter (obviously) custom glass bottles. The bottle even has measuring markings on the side, so consumers can pour exact amounts, meaning one less measuring cup they have to wash! One marketing hurdle, however, is informing customers of the versatility of Origin 846.
“Origin has been on the market for about a year and we want to make sure that our customers recognize and trust our brand for their everyday cooking,” commented Dustin. “The approach to marketing we want to take this year is we want people to use it, we want people to get it into their hands and realize this is the olive oil they are going to need and use in their homes every day. Some people are very concerned about if I put olive oil in my dish I want it to be smooth, because I want to taste the other ingredients. You should be tasting the olive oil, but it shouldn't overpower any other ingredients, and ours doesn't. In fact, it complements flavors while keeping your meals healthy.”
Origin 846 hits the sweet spot between flavor and versatility. While the oil has peppery and grassy notes, it still retains a very smooth and mild flavor, perfect for vinaigrettes, sautéing, baking, drizzling, or even dipping bread. Consumers crave versatility and taste, and Origin 846 has both on lock.
