Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Celebrates National Cheese Lover’s Day

Americans love cheese. It’s empirically true. In fact, we’re eating more cheese than ever before—with annual per capita consumption averaging 37.2 pounds, according to USDA/ERS dairy data. And this January 20th, the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Cheese are encouraging eaters across the nation to celebrate National Cheese Lover’s Day like a true blue (cheese-loving) Wisconsinite.

Why? There are a ton of good reasons, and Wisconsin Cheese has answers. Whole fat and high-protein foods have many proven health benefits, making cheese a delicious indulgence yet part of a healthy diet. Instagram food culture is also contributing to this growth with cheeseboards covering social media newsfeeds; there are, the association notes, as many as 18.8M tags for #cheese on Instagram alone.

“People love cheese so much that they dedicate an entire day to it,” the association noted in a press release. “While any day is a ‘grate’ day to celebrate cheese, National Cheese Lover’s Day gives cheese lovers another reason to share their passion and nobody does cheese better than Wisconsin, which makes nearly half of the specialty cheese in the U.S.”
