The Danes are here! I’ve long wanted to go to Denmark simply because I’ve heard their pastries are to die for, but now that Ole & Steen is setting up shop in New York City, I might not have to!
The bakery hails from Denmark and opened its doors to downtown New Yorkers on April 20. Known for ingredient-driven Danish pastries and meticulously hand-crafted breads, Ole & Steen brings a modern sense of Danish hospitality along with 30 years of pastry and bread-baking expertise to New York.
According to a press release, Ole & Steen’s new Tribeca location marks the bakery’s first United States opening since 2019 and the brand’s reintroduction to locals and visitors alike, sharing quality ingredients and a one-of-a-kind authentic Danish experience.
There are many things to be excited about, but one thing I can’t help but laser-focus on is the bread. Freshly baked Danish breads are the backbone of Ole & Steen. They serve as a reminder of the time-honored craft from Denmark, providing a distinctive canvas for sandwiches and Smørrebrød, or enjoyed on their own alongside Gouda cheese and cultured butter.
The company’s signature Rugbrød (Danish rye bread) is made with care by cracking and soaking rye kernels in water overnight before introducing a dark malt extract and sourdough to give it a nutty, acidic flavor. Can you see me drooling?
