Growing up in a household where dessert reigns supreme, I can safely say that my tastebuds know a delicious sweet treat when they come across one, and Ethel’s dessert bars have more than passed the test. The gluten-free, sustainably sourced products come in six different flavors, and each one is sure to leave a sweet taste in consumers’ mouths just as they did in mine. As the dessert company continues to take the bakery sector by storm, Founder Jill Bommarito gave me some exclusive insight into the history and future of the company.
Since its inception, Ethel’s has transitioned from a leased church kitchen to a 20,000 square-foot facility that will soon have over 50 employees. As the company continues to expand its horizons, Ethel’s is looking forward to growing its reach and building its lineup.
“We are looking forward to adding retailers, growing in convenience and coffee shop channels, spreading further and deeper throughout the country, and growing export further in Canada and elsewhere,” explains Jill. “Look for seasonal offerings in 2021 and new flavors, including berry and fruit flavors, in both our three-count packages and our smaller single-serve packages.”
The dessert bars currently come in six signature flavors including Brownie, Turtle Dandy, Blondie, Raspberry Crumble, Cinnamon Crumble, and my personal favorite Pecan Dandy—although with such amazing flavors it makes it incredibly hard to choose just one.
Offered in both tubs and the brand-new single-serve options that come in ready-to-merchandise caddies, Ethel’s has a packaging option for every type of shopper. With the demand for pre-packaged items hitting an all-time high, the handmade, sweet treats will give consumers a safe option to pick up at retail.
Jill founded Ethel’s back in 2011, originally operating as a wholesale company. The dessert brand was named after Jill’s grandmother, Ethel St. John, who taught her how to bake from an early age. As Jill explains, she wanted to continue her grandmother’s legacy while also providing delicious gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions, as her family has dealt with celiac disease for over 40 years. Therefore, she founded the company with baked goods that could be enjoyed by everyone.
“I feel sharing food is a highlight in life. Everyone should be able to sit at a table and share amazing food together,” says Jill. “I am committed to making an impact on the baking industry in two ways: First, we take the time to make our amazing desserts by hand in the traditional way to provide the very best taste experience. Second, we are the first gluten-free bakery item to be sold in the fresh bakery that is enjoyed by ALL, no matter your dietary need, because of taste and quality.”
All of Ethel’s unique, flavor varieties are made in small batches with simple, local, clean ingredients including hormone-free butter and cage-free eggs. Every bar is certified gluten-free and hand-crafted in a dedicated gluten-free facility in order to ensure safety, and provide everyone with the opportunity to sink their teeth into these amazing confections.
