Nearly a year and a half ago, Stop & Shop, an Ahold Delhaize banner, announced that it had interest in acquiring King Kullen’s 37-store operation. Now, those plans have been terminated.

Gordon Reid, President, Stop & Shop“Both companies have put forth an incredible amount of effort to work through unanticipated challenges that have arisen, and we regret that we’re not able to move forward,” remarked Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid. “King Kullen has a strong legacy on the island, and we wish it continued success. Stop & Shop remains committed to the Long Island community, to serving our customers in the market well, and to investing in our associates and our stores in Nassau and Suffolk counties.”

At the time the acquisition was announced, King Kullen operated 32 stores in the New York market of Long Island. It also operates five Wild by Nature organic grocery stores.

Stop & Shop too operates in Long Island, with nearly 50 stores in operation.

Brian Cullen, Co-President, King Kullen Grocery Co.“We look forward to continuing to focus on what we do best: serving our great customers across Long Island and supporting our hard-working store associates,” stated Brian Cullen, Co-President of King Kullen. “We are enthusiastic about the future and well-positioned to serve Nassau and Suffolk counties for many years to come. In short, we are here for the long term.”

Will Stop & Shop soon be looking elsewhere? Will acquisition news rock the market? Deli Market News will remain vigilant.
