NEW YORK, NY
Beemster Cheese is encouraging New York residents and visitors alike to take a dive in the Hudson River all to support ALS research on June 21, 2015.
The inaugural New Amsterdam City Swim (NACS) is a charity swim, followed by a celebration post-swim party at Pier 26 in Hudson River Park. Beemster, this year’s sponsor, will be featured prominently in the menu options. Guests can sample the company’s traditional Dutch cheeses, mingle with Beemster’s famous 12’ cow, and enjoy games and live music all to raise money for ALS research, according to a press release.
NACS begins at Hudson River Park’s Pier 45 (near Christopher Street) and finishes at Pier 26 (near N Moore Street/Tribeca). The post-swim celebration event is open to swimmers and supporters.

The roots of the NACS began in 2011 when a group of friends participated in an ALS charity swim across the Hellespont River in Turkey in honor of their friend Weert Jan Weerts (1970-2013), who was diagnosed with ALS in 2006. In 2012, the friends organized the first official Amsterdam City Swim in which 1,100 swimmers swam 2km across the canals of Amsterdam and raised more than $922,000. More than $6 million has been raised since then.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Project MinE, a large-scale research initiative devoted to finding the genetic cause of ALS.
