H-E-B Opens Sustainable Austin Location

HEB Grocery has made its commitment to sustainability apparent with an eco-friendly new store in Austin, Texas.

The new 83,000 square-foot store staffed by a crew of 315 is registered to become LEED certified and is expected to exceed the silver level. It will also be certified by the Austin Energy Green Building program, according to the Austin Business Journal.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and measures the sustainability and energy efficiency of buildings and various developments.
The new HEB is slated to reduce energy use by 50 percent, though current projections estimate it will operate at a 79 percent reduction. Another goal is to reduce water usage by 50 percent, with current projections at 65 percent reduction.
