LA FARGE, WI
Organic Valley, the world's largest organic farmer cooperative, is reporting that its sales have increased 8.5% last year, for a total of $929.5 million, according to the Greenbay Press Gazette.
The company made the announcement during its annual 3-day meeting in La Crosse, WI. More than 500 of its 1,844 farmer members attended the gathering, the La Crosse Tribune reported.
Organic Valley supplies roughly 50% of the organic milk purchased in the US and is the top-selling organic milk in China, Sales Vice President Eric Newman said.
Although organic milk sales are increasing, overall milk consumption is decreasing in the US.
"That is disappointing, because we want people to drink milk — and we hope they drink organic," Newman said.
Newman said that vegetables are also still a part of Organic Valley's business. For this reason, the company has built a refrigerated warehouse in Wisconsin that is being used by 150 farmers, many of whom are Amish.
