Three IDFA Members Earn U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards

UNITED STATES

Hilmar Cheese Company, HP Hood LLC and Prairie Farms Dairy, all members of the IDFA, were recognized by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy this week for sustainability and environmental consciousness.

According to a press release, Hilmar Cheese and HP Hood both received U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, with Prairie Farms earning an Honorable Mention.

The companies were three of twelve award winners for the 2015 year.

Hilmar Cheese Company, based in Hilmar, CA., received both the Outstanding Dairy Processing and the Manufacturing Sustainability for its LEED Platinum® Certification and water conservation.

HP Hood LLC, based in Sacramento, CA., reportedly earned the Outstanding Achievement in Community Partnerships for its work with the technology company, CleanWorld, to repurpose both packaging and product waste in a nearby biodigester in order to supply renewable fuel for Sacramento truck fleets, as well as nutrient-dense liquid fertilizer for surrounding farms.

Prairie Farms Dairy in Geneva, IL., received an honorable mention for Outstanding Achievement in Community Partnerships for the work it has done with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, bringing more than 194,000 gallons of milk to families in its “Milk 2 My Plate” program.

The U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards first launched in 2011, according to the release. The awards reportedly make an effort to recognize dairy farms, businesses, and partnerships for being socially responsible, economically viable practices, and endeavoring to be environmentally sound.

Recipients are chosen from four categories:

  • Outstanding dairy farm sustainability.
  • Outstanding dairy processing and manufacturing.
  • Outstanding achievement in resource stewardship.
  • Outstanding achievement in community partnerships.

IDFA President and CEO Connie Tipton joined more than 20 judges in evaluating this year’s award recipients.
