Wal-Mart to Invest C$500 Million in Canada Expansion

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO

Wal-Mart is planning to invest approximately C$500 million ($452 million) to expand its Canadian footprint this year, ultimately creating more than 7,500 jobs in the area. The locations of the stores and the distribution center projects were undisclosed, but will be announced at a later time.

More than C$376 million will be spent for store projects, C$91 million for distribution networks to expand fresh food capability, and C$31 million for e-commerce projects, according to Chicago Tribune.

By January 31, 2015, the company expects to complete 35 supercentre projects in Canada, adding one million square feet of retail space. By that time, the company’s store count will rise to 395, including 282 supercentres and 113 discount stores.

Wal-Mart’s Canadian expansion plans come hot off the heels of Target’s announcement to expand in Canada, who said it will be opening another nine new stores throughout 2014.
