Wegmans Food Markets Adding Japanese Flare

Wegmans Food Markets is offering new sushi combinations just in time for Independence Day. The company is celebrating by decorating the stores’ sushi areas in red, white, and blue balloons and will throw a Sushi Firecracker Launch Party on Friday June 29th from 12-2pm and 5-7pm, and on Saturday from 11am-3pm.

Customers will have the opportunity to taste Wegmans’ new Firecracker Shrimp Roll featuring crispy fried tempura shrimp, watch chefs assemble the rolls, receive $1 coupons good for sushi or sashimi combinations, sample teas and beers that pair well with sushi, and at select locations, sign up for an exciting hands-on Sushi 101 class.

Wegmans is focusing on expanding the sushi category in new directions. New Sushi Rice Bowls will be for sale in addition to the Firecracker Shrimp Roll, including the Spicy Shrimp Bowl, Tuna Bowl, and Chirashi bowl. Executive Chef John Emerson, who oversees Wegmans’ sushi program, states “Many people think sushi means rice and raw fish. Sushi actually just means vinegared rice. All other ingredients besides the seasoned rice are optional, so our chefs have been creating new combinations with flavors and ingredients people in this country especially love…”

Over the recent years, Wegmans has upgraded its equipment and tools and has educated staff about the art of sushi making, incorporating new flavors, ingredients, and textures that customers enjoy, such as crunchiness and spice. Mr. Emerson adds, “We continue to launch new varieties and options for people that traditionally might not eat sushi.” Due its quality and variety, customers are purchasing Wegmans’ sushi more often than ever before.
