This year’s Winter Fancy Food Show has once again played host to a variety of the latest deli and specialty food trends that we will be seeing this year. A panel of trendspotters named chocolate teas, seaweed chips, and truffle ketchup as just a few of the products that were all part of a larger trend towards thoughtful indulgence. Sriracha was one of the biggest flavor trends, now being seen in snacks, chocolates, and jams.

From booth to booth, some of the deli trends I saw personally were the wide selection of rubbed artisan cheeses, a greater expansion of meat snacking options, and more gluten- and GMO-free baking goods. Snacks will be coming in full force this year with bolder, more exciting and unexpected flavors. Simply Sprouted's Way Better Snacks will be a great, healthy snacking option to check out this year. Olli Salumeria’s Salamini, a bite-sized salami option, will be a great way to snack on meats on-the-go. In general, cured meats appeared to be a strong category going into 2014.

Cheese is no different. Some of the artisan cheeses I saw were packed with never-before-seen flavors like blueberries, brandy, or rum; or, they were paired with Mediterranean spices, options I haven’t seen enough of recently or not until now. I was pleasantly surprised by Montchevré’s new “Chévre Oh-La-La” item, a spreadable goat cheese that proves to be a healthier alternative to cream cheese. Saputo Cheese also delivered with some bold flavors during the show, like the company’s Rosemary Asiago, Black Pepper Romano, and Tomato Basil Parmesan cheeses.

In terms of bakery items, I saw lots more gluten-free options, like A Tavola Together’s Focaccia, Pizza Dough, and Tortilla mixes or Domata’s gluten-free seasoned flour and recipe-ready flour options.

Accoutrements and other condiments like Stonewall Kitchen's Truffle Ketchup also provided some interesting, yet flavorful opportunities to add with your next dish.

Drinks like Bruce Cost's Ginger Ale like Victoria's Kitchen All-Natural Almond Water were also featured as trendsetters during the show.

The show was jam-packed with more than 1,350 exhibitors and 18,000 attendees. If these trends and new products are anything to go by, 2014 will be a great year for the deli category.
