Italian Cheese Thieves Caught At Last

ITALY
Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

For two years there have been a string of cheese-related thefts throughout Italy involving robbing warehouses of the highly sought after Parmegiano-Reggiano.

The Smithsonian reports that it was actually a gang that was performing the heists, having stolen upwards of $875,000 worth of cheese, and they have finally been busted.

In following the trail of the pilferers of Parmegiano, authorities reportedly uncovered a number of tools involved in the successful stealing of cheese leading up to the final bust, including:

  • Weapons.
  • Radios.
  • Tools for breaking into targeted buildings/warehouses.
  • Electronics for disarming alarm systems.

As we previously reported, Parmegiano-Reggiano, also known as “King of Cheeses,” is like gold in Italy’s cheese community, even being used as acceptable collateral in specific banking systems.

A 2011 Research for Retail survey found that cheese and crime may be more intertwined than we want to believe. According to the report, four percent of the globe’s cheese production is stolen on average each year.
