I’m your pretty average mid-20’s millennial, so my idea of an extravagant sandwich would be going to one of my favorite midtown delis and spending (at the highest premium) $10 to $12.
And, of course, I expect that sandwich to be ready within minutes.
I am not, by a long-shot, YouTube and television host Andy George.
The How to Make Everything personality spent $1,500 to build (and we mean build) a chicken sandwich from scratch, taking six months to do it.
“I spent six months and $1500 to completely make a sandwich from scratch,” George wrote in the description of his YouTube video. “Including growing my own vegetables, making my own salt from ocean water, milking a cow to make cheese, grinding my own flour from wheat, collecting my own honey, and killing a chicken myself.”
Though the video is available for public viewing, we hesitated to post it due to the fact that the “killing a chicken myself” part is included in the 3 minute 43 second step-by-step, and might offend some viewers. To watch the full “How to Make a $1,500 Sandwich in Only 6 Months,” click here.
So after all this time and effort, what was George’s reaction when biting into his home-made masterpiece?
“It’s not bad. That’s about it, six months of my life for… not bad,” he chuckles with a look on his face like he could cry.
Why, then, go through all this for a sandwich that was less than perfect?
“I set out to challenge myself to make many everyday items we take for granted from scratch,” George states in the description.
So while the steps may seem extreme, George’s efforts and video serve as a reminder of what every aspect of the deli industry does to build one chicken sandwich.
