Marin French Cheese Schloss Wins Super Gold at UK’s World Cheese Awards

Marin French Cheese’ Schloss took home the gold, having been named as the recipient of the 28th Annual World Cheese Awards’ Super Gold award on Thursday, Nov. 26th in Birmingham, England.

“We are very proud of the teams at Marin French and Laura Chenel’s,” General Manager Philippe Chevrollier said, according to a press release. “Working with the freshest milk delivered daily from family-owned dairies, they add ingenuity, skill, and know-how to make award-winning, delicious cheese.”

Schloss, meaning “castle,” was first made by Marin French in the early 1900’s. According to the company, it gained a following of European immigrants who longed for the hearty, pungent cheeses from the old country.

Schloss competed with other Washed Rind Cheeses from all over the globe, including Switzerland, France, England, and Canada, bringing home the only award to an American-made cheese in its category. It has had a record-breaking year, having also racked up top awards from:

  • Wisconsin’s US Championship Cheese Contest (3rd Place)
  • CalExpo State Fair (Bronze)
  • Bested its own Silver award from the 2014 at the World Cheese Awards

Marin French Cheesemakers recently updated the Schloss’ original square shape to an eight ounce wheel, as well as adding a dollop of extra cream and maintaining its distinctive aroma and orange-hued rind through continuing the customary brine wash during ripening.

In addition to the Super Gold, Marin French also took home Bronze awards for Petite Camembert and Supreme Brie while its sister company in Sonoma, Laura Chenel’s, was awarded Silver for Chef’s Chevre in the fresh Goat Cheese Category.

Organized by the Guild of Fine Foods, this year’s World Cheese Awards brought together more than 2,700 cheeses from 25 different countries, all of which were judged by more than 250 international experts.
