For approaching 50 years, Fiddyment Farms has been producing outstanding pistachios and pistachio-based products. From plain and flavored pistachios, pistachio kernels, butters, pastes, and confections, the company has been cultivating and crafting healthy gourmet goods with decadent flavors since 1968.
I recently had a chance to meet the Fiddyment Farms crew at the 2017 Summer Fancy Food Show, where the company’s Pistachio Paste was singled out, from a field of 3,000 entries, for a sofi Gold Award in the Nut Butter, Seed Butter category. I recently caught up with Diane Wood, General Manager of Fiddyment Farms, to find out more about this exceptional company.
Q: Tell me a little about Fiddyment Farms' history: when was the company founded and by whom?
Fiddyment Farms was founded by David Fiddyment in 1968. David comes from a long family history of farming. His great-grandmother who moved from Illinois acquired land in Placer County in 1855 and the family has been farming ever since. David was one of the very first to plant pistachios in California and is considered a pioneer in the pistachio industry. His passion for growing the finest quality pistachios evolved into a business that has continued to grow over the past 49 years.
Today, David is 94 and has handed off most of the daily business activities to his family members and team but with David’s philosophy of quality always guiding us, we continue to develop new lines of healthy gourmet pistachio products including flavored pistachios, pistachio kernels, pistachio butter, pistachio paste, and confections.
Q: When did the company first introduce its line of pistachio butter and paste? What is the distinction between the two products?
We have milled our pistachios into pistachio butter for over 20 years. Development for the paste started about 5 years ago. It has been on the market in its current form for about 2 years. The butter is produced similarly to other nut butters and has a similar texture and consistency as a natural peanut butter (but with a great pistachio taste). To make the paste we have developed a special method which gives the paste a much smoother and more fluid consistency, and further brings out the sweetness and intense flavor of the nut. These qualities makes it ideal for use in cooking and baking, or in making ice cream or gelato.
Both the butter and paste are wonderful on their own as well. They are both made 100% from California pistachios and contain all the wonderful healthy nutrients found naturally in the nut. There are no preservatives, sweeteners, or colors. There are not many domestic pistachio paste producers in the market today. Of the few companies that do make it, most add other ingredients including other types of nuts, additives like food coloring, sugars, or other sweeteners and artificial ingredients.
Q: Can you tell me a little about the experience of winning the 2017 sofi Gold Award?
Several years were spent in developing the special method we use to create our paste. It is very gratifying for us to see that our passion and dedication to excellence in developing this product has been recognized by receiving such a distinguished award. We feel very proud that our paste was chosen for the gold sofi by such a large group of specialty food experts. It exemplifies our continuing commitment to making the finest pistachio products on the market today.
Q: Do you have any advice for retailers looking to promote Fiddyment Farms' products or cross-promotional ideas or ideas for retail destinations/displays?
Eating pistachios has great health benefits. They have lots of antioxidants, protein, and healthy fats so using it in conjunction with healthy lifestyle promotions would be a good match. They are also a great snack food for watching the Super Bowl or other sporting events. Pistachio Paste would be great to promote for baking, ice cream making, and creating holiday treats. They also make a great gift alternative to chocolate or other more traditional gift choices.
Now approaching the company’s 50th anniversary, Diane tells me that the company has no plans to slow down. With new product developments in the works for 2018 and healthy snacking trends breathing winds into the company’s sails, Fiddyment Farms is ready to greet the next fifty.
