Venus Wafers Jim Anderko Spotlights New Mariner Organic Saltines

Fresh off the Summer Fancy Food Show floor, and gearing up for another go at the upcoming Winter Fancy Foods, Venus Wafers’ Jim Anderko is showcasing the company’s new addition to its organic line, the Mariner Organic Saltines, just in time for its nationwide debut.

Jim Anderko, Sales Manager, Venus Wafers“What we try to do is look at our everyday crackers, and see if we can make them organic without raising retail pricing,” Jim tells me. “98% of our products are non-GMO project verified since making a commitment under our brand back when the project first started. Now, we just carry that towards all of our brands: Mariner Water, Stoned Wheat, Organic Flatbread, and now Organic Saltines. Some people say, ‘well, why a saltine?’ Well, we use those ingredients in most of our crackers anyhow, so it’s just a matter of a couple of twists–like adding sea salt.”

Immigrating to America in the early 1900s as a jeweler by trade, Napolean Barmakian turned to the cracker business in 1931, selling Venus Wafers’ lavasch crackers door-to-door. After selling primarily to restaurants, Venus Wafers took on Hickory Farms as a customer in 1960, and the company has continued to expand ever since. Today, Venus Wafers operates under the same principles on which Napolean founded the cracker company: natural, nutritious crackers, and flatbread, that taste delicious.

Rich in quality and flavor, the Mariner Organic Saltines, along with being non-GMO project certified, are Certified Organic by QAI, verified Vegan by the Vegan Action/Vegan Awareness Foundation, and certified kosher by the Orthodox Union. And while competitors offer similar products, Jim affirms that none have the taste that Venus Wafers’ crackers have.

“We’ve done something to it that makes it unique for us,” Jim says.

While not new to the organic market, Venus Wafers has continued to increase its organic offerings after high consumer demand, and requests from loyal customers, over the last 12-18 months.

“We’re always looking at what we have that we can make organic,” Jim tells me. “Everybody is reading the ingredient labels today. If you take our regular saltine box and read the ingredients, there’s only four or five, where as if you read a competitor’s box there might be ten. And the question is why? The way we produce our crackers is based off of our philosophy: made simple, made right. That’s kind of it.”
