Just because you are old, doesn’t mean you can’t be new. Just ask the nearly 160-year-old cheese company, Marin French Cheese Co. While it may be one of the country’s oldest cheese companies, such a legacy and vantage point gives it the benefit of experience to see the possibilities, the necessity of evolution to stay top-of-mind, and the ability to see what has worked and not worked historically. In essence, these deeply seeded Marin French Cheese roots constantly bring a fresh perspective to a company that has seen it all.

Bonnie Kaufman, Associate Brand Manager, Marin French Cheese Co.“Marin French Cheese Co. was born with the ambition to bring centuries-old European cheesemaking techniques to Northern California, and that ambition has earned us the reputation and loyalty we have today,” Bonnie Kaufman, Associate Brand Manager, shares. “Our persistence in mastering the craft has been driven by the pioneering spirit of promise brought west by our Founders. Operating at our historic creamery on the border of Sonoma and Marin counties for over 155 years, we marry French tradition and a unique California vision to produce award-winning and original cheeses.”

You can almost see the landscape unfolding in front of you, rolling through decades of market conditions with coveted product research and development. Luckily, Marin French will be bringing its vision to buying operations far and wide at the 2024 Winter Fancy Food Show.

“While traditional French recipes serve as the foundation for our soft-ripened cheeses, we’re passionate about finding the magic between old and new worlds, crafting exceptional and balanced flavors with ingredients like truffles, mustard seeds, and jalapeños,” Bonnie expresses. “We use only the freshest local milk to produce our cheese in small batches, using cultures and taking advantage of the terroir to coax a distinct Northern California character into every wheel.”

Such a deep dedication to the craft brings a range of consumers to the company, calling anyone with an adventurous palate who finds themselves drawn to products that tell a story, take them on an adventure, or are steeped in a rich sense of heritage.

“Prioritizing recipe development in our marketing efforts plays a crucial role in educating consumers about consumption opportunities, boosting turnover rates, and utilizing recipe assets for menu planning and merchandising inspiration,” Bonnie tells me. “Our ongoing marketing initiatives contribute to product visibility on shelves, incorporating a compelling Call to Action (CTA) like linking to store locators rather than Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) channels. Additionally, we are increasing our investment in Instacart advertising to further support our products.”

When it comes to Marin French Cheese’s promotional strategy, the company also takes pride in the effectiveness and increased sales it observes during its promotions.

“We plan to maintain this effectiveness and enhance our strategy in the year ahead. For example, we plan to shine a spotlight on slower-moving yet cherished products while ensuring a robust pace for our core items,” Bonnie teases. “In 2024, we’d love to increase the support we can provide to our retail partners, mostly via digital assets and other merchandising and display enhancements. We’ve found that different retailers have different needs and we’re always open to feedback on what would be most helpful. We encourage retailers to reach out!”
