It’s hard for me to even remember what grocery stores were like before technology began transforming the sector. More and more retailers are adopting state-of-the-art systems to offer their shoppers both safety and convenience. The latest grocer to join in on all the fun is The GIANT Company, which recently unveiled plans to introduce automation technology to its fulfillment center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

GIANT will be utilizing micro-fulfillment technology developed by Swisslog, according to an article from the Philadelphia Business Journal, that uses robots and bins to help process orders in its 124,000-square-foot facility, which is currently under renovation.

The GIANT Company recently unveiled plans to introduce automation technology to its fulfillment center in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaThe robots will reportedly be used to store and retrieve products across the center in tandem with human associates to fill online orders, helping the company meet an increased demand for service caused by the pandemic. The combination of manual picking and automation will allow GIANT to handle approximately 15,000 online orders per week for delivery throughout the area, the company explained in a statement.

GIANT also revealed it is planning to hire upwards of 200 people to help run the Pennsylvania facility.

Ahold USA and its banners are working to expand e-commerce fulfillment capabilities to create an omnichannel supply chain. By March 1, it will have a total of 18 self-managed distribution centers and 28 e-commerce fulfillment centers, with plans to increase the number of distribution centers to 27 over the next two years.

Deli Market News will keep an eye out as automation continues to change the face of retail.
