Expansion strategies in the retail arena require immense planning, whether in terms of geography or internal structure. For Hy-Vee, the Iowa-based retailer is strategizing on both fronts. The grocer recently disclosed key operational structural changes as it continues its expansion plans into Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana, revealing the relocation of up to 500 office employees to retail stores across its network.

Tina Potthoff, Senior Vice President of Communications, Hy-Vee“We currently have approximately 400 store leadership positions open across our eight-state region in addition to other full-time opportunities,” Tina Potthoff, Senior Vice President of Communications, said in a statement emailed to the Des Moines Register. “Since we are in the midst of these changes, we don’t have specific details on any final numbers of corporate employees who are accepting positions at retail at this time. We should know more after the internal job fair this week.”

As noted by the source, these employees will be offered moving bonuses and other incentives to relocate to store locations that currently have open retail management positions. Additionally, the source noted that 94 percent of Hy-Vee’s 93,000 employees are at the retail level.

With plans in place for a Southeast expansion, Hy-Vee is restructuring its operations and relocating up to 500 office employees to retail stores across its eight-state network

“According to company leaders, there are hundreds of retail management positions open across the company waiting to be filled,” the company stated in an advertorial with the source. “Many of Hy-Vee’s corporate employees started their career at the retail store and have the experience required to fill these positions.”

The grocer currently runs 285 locations in its network and is still planning a pivotal expansion to the Southeast. However, the company is no longer expecting to open 21 stores by 2025.

With the landscape continuing to shift, how will the retail scene change with these recent developments? Keep a tab open as we report.
