Quality, authenticity, and innovation. These are the characteristics that have propelled Schuman Cheese through its 75-year history. As the company commemorates its anniversary this month, I got in touch with Allison Schuman, Chief Business Development Officer.

Allison Schuman, Chief Business Development Officer, Schuman Cheese“A number of factors have contributed to our ongoing success, but I think two key ingredients have allowed us to endure and continue to succeed,” she told me. “The first is a generational passion for this business, which has helped us push the boundaries of what is possible in the cheese and dairy space and build on the success of the previous generation to put our unique mark on the future. The second includes surrounding ourselves with a fantastic team who brings vast experience, superior problem-solving, and commitment to the business.”

Having started out as importers, Schuman respects Italian tradition and prides itself on blending old-world techniques with new-world technology to achieve new flavors and unique cheeses. The company’s goal is to demystify the complexity of the cheese category for shoppers, delivering award-winning products so consumers can Cheese Confidently.

According to Allison, some of Shuman’s key accomplishments over the years include:

  • Gaining representation for Roquefort Cheese in 1956
  • Beginning relationship with Zanetti over four generations ago
  • Owning and teaching technology to cheese plants in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s
  • Acquiring cheese conversions facilities from 1988-2008
  • Buying first cheese plant in 2007, a regular award-winning facility
  • Winning Dairy Plant of the year 2019 for preeminent hard cheese facility
  • Creating and spinning off a widely successful, national cheese snack: Whisps

And, as she tells me, there is still much more to come.

“We are starting to blur the lines between dessert and cheese and have some fascinating innovations that we can’t wait to share in the upcoming year,” Allison continued. “We are also starting to play aggressively in the plant-based space with our Vevan brand, under which our line of un-cream cheeses are about to launch. As someone who can personally eat her weight in cream cheese, I can say that this dairy-free, plant-based version hits the mark perfectly.”

As we round out the month of July and Schuman looks toward its future growth plans, Allison assured me that the company is celebrating its milestone in its own way.

COVID-19 has made it difficult for us to get back together and physically be in the same location to celebrate this momentous occasion with all the people who have helped make our 75 years possible,” she concluded. “Now that we are starting to return to an office setting in the coming months, we hope to find a way for us all to celebrate together, or honestly just celebrate being around one another.”

That, I believe, is one thing many in our industry can identify with. So, let us continue to celebrate and uplift each other for many years to come.
