Players big and small continue to seek a balance between demands of both consistent supply and sustainable practices, and a point to even out those scales looks to have been scored on the part of Tyson Foods. The company has scaled up its sustainability game with plans for more than five million U.S. acres of cattle grazing land to be verified as sustainable beef production practices.
“We recognize the importance of sustainable beef production practices that take care of people, the planet, and animals,” said Steve Stouffer, Group President of Tyson Fresh Meats. “Our goal is to work with ranchers to verify, and when possible, improve those practices so that we can be transparent with our customers and consumers about how cattle in our supply chain are raised.”
The move would make Tyson’s beef transparency program one of the largest of its kind in the U.S., according to a press release, building on the company’s goal for beef sustainability.
“Sustainability is a business imperative in the U.S. beef industry to ensure long-term food production, economic security for ranchers and their communities, and a healthy environment for us all,” said Dr. Sasha Gennet, Director of Sustainable Grazing Lands for The Nature Conservancy in North America, which Tyson is working with to ensure improved grassland and rangeland management. “Tyson Foods is setting a great example of a company that is taking proactive steps to achieve a sustainable beef system that supports farmers and ranchers while improving our critical natural resources, including soil, water, and wildlife.”
Tyson is working with one of the largest providers of certification and verification services for the food industry, Where Food Comes From, to achieve this ambitious goal, and said it will source cattle from BeefCARE™ verified beef producers, which is recognized by the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. The program already includes more than 200 ranches, with plans in action to expand over the next several years.
