SEATTLE, WA
Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

When shoppers start looking for their holiday hauls, Amazon is one of the first retailers they turn to. This year's numbers prove that they have cornered the holiday shopping market. During both Thanksgiving and the current lead-up to Christmas, consumers are hopping online and traveling in store to have their holiday needs met. The e-tailer recently announced that its Cyber Monday was the single biggest shopping day in the company’s history and the Turkey 5—the days starting with Thanksgiving and continuing to Monday—broke records as well.

Jeff Wilke, CEO, Worldwide Consumer, Amazon“Black Friday and Cyber Monday continue to break records on Amazon year over year, which tells us that customers love shopping for deals to kick off the holiday shopping season,” stated Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer.

He also described the company's efforts to entice shoppers, stating that “with curated gift guides, convenient shopping experiences, incredible product selection, and free shipping with no minimum purchase amount, Amazon offers customers tremendous value—sure to deliver smiles all season long.”

Holiday weekend highlights for the United States included:

  • More than 20 percent growth on Black Friday year-over-year in sales by small and medium-sized businesses worldwide
  • More than 180 million items ordered by Amazon.com customers during the Turkey-5

According to a press release, groceries purchased at Whole Foods Market played a factor in these record-breaking sales. Prime members purchased last-minute ingredients for Thanksgiving meals—such as lemons, celery, and onions—and prepared holiday meals numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Additionally, an all-time record number of turkeys were sold during this Thanksgiving season—the other ingredients were obviously needed to frame a marvelous bird!
