I think it’s safe to say that whoever came up with the schoolyard taunt, “1st is the worst, 2nd is the best…” was never able to nab that coveted first place spot, because let me tell you: There’s nothing sweeter than first place. Roth® Cheese is reveling in that sweetness after leaving the 2019 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest with four medals, including two Best of Class awards!
“We are incredibly honored to bring home four awards at this year’s competition and especially proud that two of our cheeses were named top 20 finalists,” said Tim Omer, President and Managing Director for Emmi Roth. “These distinctions would not be possible without the hard work and talent of our entire team at Emmi Roth, all of whom can be proud of their role in crafting these award-winning cheeses.”
The company’s signature alpine-style cheese, Roth Grand Cru® Reserve, was one of two of Roth Cheese products to make it into the competition’s top 20, earning it a Best of Class in the Open Class: Hard Cheese with Natural Rind category and a score of 99.40 out of 100.
The cheesemaker’s Roth Pavino, a bold alpine-style cheese sold exclusively at Whole Foods Market, also made the top 20 and earned a Best of Class. In fact, the Pavino ranked highest in the Washed Rind/Smear Ripened Hard Cheeses category with a score of 99.85, according to a press release.
Roth Cheese also took home a second-place award in the Open Class: Peppered Flavored (Medium Heat) category for its Chipotle Havarti, and a third-place award in the Natural Snack Cheese category for its Roth Creamy Gouda Snack Cheese.
This year’s contest was one of the largest to date, with 2,555 entries in 116 classes from 35 states—a record number of entries in the contest’s 20-year history. A.k.a., a fantastic year to earn four medals!
