Another win for Bellwether Farms! The family-owned business celebrated its win for earning the coveted Gold award in the Cow Milk Cheese category at the 2019 sofi™ Awards for its Whole Milk Basket Ricotta.

Liam Callahan, Co-Owner and Cheesemaker, Bellwether Farms“It is an amazing honor to be awarded this sofi,” said Liam Callahan, Bellwether Farms Owner and Cheesemaker. “Our team takes many steps to ensure this is a special ricotta, and we are thrilled with the recognition that it is the best.”

According to a press release, Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta was also honored earlier this year with the esteemed Good Food Award at the 2019 Good Food Foundation awards ceremony. The distinguished flavor and texture of Bellwether Farms’ Whole Milk Basket Ricotta comes from the high-caliber ingredients and traditional techniques.

The Whole Milk Basket Ricotta won Gold at this year's sofi Awards

The whole milk is first cultured and then slowly heated in small kettles using fresh, whole 100 percent Jersey cow milk from a neighboring farm, developing the flavor and texture. The delicate curds are carefully hand-ladled into the draining baskets to preserve the quality of the product. To protect the ricotta until it reaches the customer's table, the ricotta is then sold in the draining basket.

Along with the company’s popular cheeses, Bellwether Farms also produces Sheep Milk Yogurt. As stated in the press release, the first sheep dairy west of the Mississippi, Bellwether Farms was founded by Cindy Callahan in 1986 when a flock of sheep was needed to control the grass on their Sonoma land. Every cheese and yogurt is still made on the farm by Callahan and his crew.

Moreover, the family team established a nonprofit Bellwether Farms Foundation in 2016 and is passionate about supporting organizations that provide hunger relief or offer food-education to their communities, pledging one percent of its sales to strengthen the food system and seek opportunities where its products are sold to invest in communities.

Bellwether offers its own yogurt as well as a variety of cheeses
