Did you know that Calavo stands for California avocado? This is just one tidbit shared with us by the company’s Mike York, Sales Director, in a recent interview.
“We've been at it for 100 years now, and this is the 100th anniversary. But 60 years ago we began making other products such as guacamole. And we did that in our Santa Paula, California, plant; it was packed in cans, much like a sardine can,” Mike told us.
Today the company packs its guacamole in several convenience-forward formats: tubs, pouches, and squeeze pouches. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and quesadillas were just a few options Mike mentioned that pair excellently with these products.
“Those squeeze pouches will prevent any browning that is associated with things like avocados, bananas, and potatoes. That will prevent the avocado from browning for two weeks,” Mike explained. “The convenience is that you don't have to use it all on your first opening, so if you need an ounce out of a 14 oz tube, you only need an ounce [and] you have two weeks to use it all.”
