As food consumption demand continues to grow across the world, food manufacturers are stepping up to the plate. Recently, Cargill announced it is doubling its production capacity of its Cold-Water Swelling Starch (CWSS) at its Pandaan sweetener plant in Indonesia.

Derived from plant origins, CWSS are the best-in-class instant starch solutions that gives a unique texture to end products, while offering improved viscosity, better dispersibility, and more flexibility in processing, stated the press release. A cost-effective and superior solution, cold water swelling starches are the ingredient-of-choice for food manufacturers who are seeking to enhance the indulgence and excitement of their food and beverage products. They are ideal for cold prepared dairy products, snacks, bakery products, bakery fillings, and sauces and dressings.

Franck Monmont, Managing Director, Cargill Starches, Sweeteners & Texturizers Asia“Since the start of our cold-water swelling starch line in Pandaan three years ago, we have provided customers in the region with shorter delivery lead times, increased supply reliability, and more cost-competitive, Asia-focused specialty starch products,” said Franck Monmont, Managing Director of Cargill Starches, Sweeteners & Texturizers Asia, in a separate release. “Along with our recent announcement of a U.S. $100 million investment to build a corn wet mill and starch dryer at the same site, this latest development reaffirms Cargill’s confidence in Asia as a leading food and beverage market, as well as our long-term commitment to support both Asian and global consumption needs as a trusted and innovative food ingredients company.”

The Pandaan plant first began producing CWSS in 2017 and has increased Cargill’s relevance to its customers in Asia with shorter delivery lead times, higher supply reliability, and more cost-competitive and Asia-focused products. Expansion is expected to be completed by May 2021.

Cargill expanded its production capabilities with the addition of another facility in Indonesia

As reportedly the first company producing CWSS in Asia, this investment underscores Cargill’s drive to position itself as a trusted and innovative food ingredients company offering a diversified portfolio of specialty solutions, including modified starches, to customers in the region.

This expansion in Asia adds to Cargill’s global footprint of CWSS manufacturing capabilities, complementing its existing lines in North America and Europe. With this focus on growth in Asia, will the company’s other global products benefit?
