It is with a heavy heart that Deli Market News heard the passing of celebrity Chef Carl Ruiz. The owner of New York-based La Cubana restaurant is known for his frequent appearances on The Food Network, including Guy’s Grocery Games.
The restaurant posted on its social media sites: “On behalf of the La Cubana family, with heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Executive Chef Carl Ruiz. No words can fully express our sadness at the sudden loss of our dear friend and brother.”
According to his biography on the La Cubana website, Ruiz had a prolific career in the food industry. He opened restaurants all over the world all while building up a successful radio and television career. He appeared on The Food Network often, making him a household name in his own right. Throughout his career, he cooked up Cuban delicacies like Fufu and the classic Elena Ruz Sandwich. Ruiz opened La Cubana in 2019 in New York City’s Meatpacking District. Paying tribute to his Cuban roots, this restaurant took authentic Cuban cuisine and added vintage cocktails and live Latin music for an old-world Havana-inspired experience.
Many of Ruiz’s friends took to social media to express their condolences and sorrow for the passing of their friend.
"You taught us how to enjoy every moment to the fullest and not live wondering 'what if,'" Chef Jet Tila tweeted.
"Can't explain the profound specialness of some people," Chef Alex Guarnaschelli said on Instagram. "This man was somehow fatherly, comforting, wise, reckless, brilliant, wickedly funny, and unique all rolled into one."
Guy Fieri, host of Guy's Grocery Games, posted on Instagram, "Over the years, I've met a lot of great people, but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million. Carl 'The Cuban' Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him."
Deli Market News extends our condolences to his family and friends at this time.
