Goat milk lovers, rejoice! A newly certified brand will be drawing in your shoppers in droves, as Darey Brands™, producer of Meyenberg®, announced it’s now Certified Humane Raised and Handled®.
“Meyenberg has always strived to partner with dairies that offer humane care to goats. We work with 25 dairies daily, and taking them to the next level of becoming Certified Humane was a large effort, but an important step for Meyenberg,” commented Vice President of Animal Management for Darey Brands Frank Fillman, who tapped into his 42 years of industry experience to achieve this certification. “ Embracing Certified Humane practices not only benefits the animals, [but] it leads to improved milk quality, and it benefits the dairies financially because we pay them a higher price for the milk we buy,” he explains. “We want to show our dedication to our partner dairies and the goats.”
As noted in the release, the company has been working for over five years to fully certify all 25 dairies that supply its goat milk, a movement that underscores its commitment to animal care alongside its reputation for producing high-quality products.
Certified Humane is a rigorous animal welfare certification awarded by the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC). Its mission is to “improve the lives of farm animals by providing viable, credible, duly monitored standards for humane food production.” Incorporating scientific research, veterinary advice, and farming expertise, the standards examine everything from nutritious feed to environmental design to comfort and care.
In the case of goats, the animals must receive a wholesome diet and clean water supply; have access to shelter, resting areas, open spaces, and other goats to socialize with; and follow strict guidelines for milking and shearing, among other key categories.
