Taking a significant step toward its sustainability goals, Mondelēz International announced the use of advanced recycling technology in Triscuit cracker packaging. This initiative will source recycled plastic for the majority of Triscuit products in the United States and Canada, aiming for a more circular economy.

Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director, Triscuit, Mondelēz International “We are excited to implement this innovative technology for Triscuit cracker packaging,” said Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director, Triscuit brand. “The Triscuit brand supports Mondelēz International’s strategic focus of working toward driving change where the world needs it most. By embracing advanced recycling technology for our product, we are not only helping to reduce reliance on fossil materials but also helping to support the company’s longer-term aim for a more circular economy for packaging at large.”

The advanced recycling initiative enables up to 50 percent of the plastic in Triscuit's bag-in-box liners to come from recycled materials. This aligns with Mondelēz International’s goal of incorporating about five percent recycled plastic content by 2025. By adopting this technology, Triscuit contributes to reducing plastic waste, moving away from the perception of soft plastic as a single-use material. According to a press release, this change is expected to divert over 1 million pounds of plastic waste from landfills annually.

Lou Fenech, Research Fellow, Packaging Sustainability, Mondelēz International“We believe that sourcing material linked to advanced recycling technologies (mass balance) helps send a signal to the broader industry and can help to drive collection, sortation, and processing of more plastic waste,” said Lou Fenech, Research Fellow, Packaging Sustainability, Mondelēz International. “We strive to continually enhance our packaging with the aim of supporting a more circular economy for packaging. We do this through reducing and evolving packaging, improving systems, and leveraging innovative partnerships.”

The new packaging is now available in supermarkets across the U.S. and Canada, following partnerships with industry leaders Berry Global Group and LyondellBasell. In addition to these packaging advancements, Triscuit is committed to sourcing wheat sustainably and supporting local communities, including donating $100,000 to Michigan State University’s agricultural program in 2023. This holistic approach reinforces Triscuit's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
