On a quest to find specialty cheeses to fill your cheese case? Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company has you covered. With a wide range of exciting, flavorful varieties, the cheesemaker’s Jennifer Luttrell, Culinary Director and Executive Chef, took a beat to give us the lowdown on some of its unique offerings.

Jennifer Luttrell, Culinary Director and Executive Chef, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company“Quinta is a soft-ripened, bloomy rind cheese. It’s wrapped in a Spruce bark that we steep in a tea of Bay Laurel leaves that we get from our farm in Point Reyes. So, it really connects the cheese to our home,” Luttrell explains. “The Bay Laurel leaf gives it some herbaceous, woodsy flavors. But it has a nice buttermilk taste up front.”

Joining its Quinta variety is Bay Blue, which Luttrell describes as having a fudgy consistency with a nice umami flavor up front and a salted caramel finish to add a little sweetness at the end. Point Reyes’ flagship cheese, Original Blue, is another power-packed offering that is full-flavored and peppery.

With a wide range of exciting, flavorful varieties, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company is a stand-out in the cheese case

And while these delicious cheeses make Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese stand out in-store, other key differentiating factors for the company will appeal to consumers.

“We’re 100 percent women-owned—owned and run by the three Giacomini sisters. So that certainly sets us apart,” details Luttrell. “The dairy farm portion started in 1959, so we are still producing cheese on that family farm.”
