Twenty years of expertise and an impressive track record in the retail sector. Such is the tool kit of Walmart’s newest Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer for its United States operations. Welcoming Judy Werthauser to the role, the grocer has tapped the industry veteran to lead the chain’s people strategy with a focus on career growth and associate opportunity while prioritizing well-being, driving culture, and enhancing its digital capabilities.
“No other company impacts so many lives in such a tangible way, and no other company creates more opportunities,” Werthauser said in a recent LinkedIn post. “With around 1.7 million associates across the country, Walmart has an unmatched ability to help both customers and associates live better. I’m excited to work alongside the world-class Walmart U.S. team as they bring the purpose of building a better world—helping people live better and renewing the planet while building thriving, resilient communities—to life.”
Before becoming an executive at Walmart, Werthauser worked for companies such as Domino’s, Target, U.S. Bank, and Marshall Field’s, an article from HRD America shared. She also spent four years on the BJ’s Wholesale Club’s Board of Directors.
Most recently, Werthauser was Chief Experience Officer for Five Below, where she helped double the size of the business from 750 locations to over 1,300 within the past three years.
Werthauser succeeds Julie Murphy, who retired earlier this week after 37 years with the retailer. In a memo sent to U.S.-based employees shared with HRD America, Donna Morris, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at Walmart, commented on the recent appointment.
“As the Walmart U.S. team works to exceed customer expectations, improve the Walmart+ experience, and accelerate our digital expansion, Judy will be an invaluable partner and counselor to the business,” she said. “Her expertise will benefit both our associates and our efforts to continue growing wallet share in the U.S.”
