Unisoy's Erin Lichman Talks Vegan Jerky Craze

Vegan food options are tearing up every aisle in grocery stores across the nation, with more variety and flavors picking up steam within and beyond the meat-free and dairy-free communities. And with convenience currently at the forefront of our industry, more and more on-the-go snack products are hitting grocery shelves to accommodate all dietary needs and wants. Launching a healthy alternative to meat-based jerky, Unisoy Vegan Jerky is introducing plant protein to snackers everywhere and creating a new category all on its own.

I caught up with Unisoy Vegan Jerky’s Erin Lichman to find out more on the vegan jerky craze.

Erin Lichman, Brand Ambassador, Unisoy“We’ve been told that the convenience food industry isn’t quite ready for vegan food yet, but we think it is a misperception of meat alternatives tasting bad,” Erin tells me. “We wanted to create a meat alternative that provides a good source of plant protein, while also cutting down on the salt content in typical meat jerkies. Our mission is to create delicious food that is good for your body and that doesn’t taste like cardboard. We also use 100 percent non-GMO ingredients and source sustainable ingredients from various places to make sure we create something that contributes positively to sustainable eating and planet Earth.”

With three flavors–Mild Spicy, Cracked Black Pepper, and Teriyaki–Unisoy’s vegan jerky is cruelty-free, responsibly-sourced, and a healthy plant-based soy snack option with 21 grams of protein per bag–just as much protein as a bag of traditional meat jerky.

Though a fairly young company–launching only three years ago–based out of Los Angeles, Erin tells me Unisoy already has a wide fan base enthusiastic and dedicated to its vegan jerky line, primarily as a result of the company’s emphasis on flavor and texture.

“Response has been overwhelmingly positive! We love the buzz we are creating about savory healthy snacks, and the trend we’re starting that anyone can participate in sustainable eating habits,” Erin shares. “People really enjoy the texture of the jerky and the bold flavor that comes with every bite. Our jerky has the nice chew and pull of how one would think jerky is supposed to be.”

Available now in simple matte packaging, with a window providing a sneak peek to the yummy snack inside, the vegan jerky bag is also resealable for freshness and for on-the-go snacking and enjoyment over multiple sittings. But, Erin reveals that most people love Unisoy’s vegan jerky so much that they finish it in one go!

“We are making a name for ourselves in the healthy snacking industry and are calling all retailers to join our movement! The trend is moving forward in healthier consumption of meat-eaters, vegans, and vegetarians and this is the product to have in your stores!” Erin explains when I ask about Unisoy’s retail partnerships.
