The supply chain may have a new partner in its midst, as Tesla has officially announced its entrance to the transportation sector. Tesla CEO confirmed that an electric tractor-trailer would be soon coming to the commercial sector.
Tesla is projecting to reveal the project this September. True to his tech roots, Musk used Twitter to break the news and slated the release date for this fall. He stated that the team had “done an amazing job. Seriously next level.”
The Verge reported that talk of a Tesla shipping vehicle first surfaced last year, when Musk stated during the company Q2 report that Tesla would be pursuing a semi. Initially, Musk stated that the unit would be revealed in the middle of the year, making this new update not far off the first mark.

The infrastructure of Tesla’s proposed tractor-trailer could make for a suitable shipping vehicle, as the Wire hailed. The semi will most likely be able to support the necessary battery packs, while also allowing for a space-saving motor. These things, the source noted, would allow for tidier packaging and increases in traveling efficiencies, though the range of the vehicle will depend on the batter used.
