As someone who’s never been to Texas—cue horrified gasp—I have also never experienced the delight that is Texas barbecue—cue slightly louder and slightly more horrified second gasp. For those in the know, however, H-E-B’s True Texas BBQ is at the forefront of barbecue perfection.
Texas Monthly Barbecue Editor Daniel Vaughn named True Texas BBQ the best barbecue chain in Texas—and obviously I have to fly to Texas immediately to corroborate his findings. In his article, he articulates the pros of dining at the chain, which includes “artfully arranged” meats and sides, and a “stunningly good” brisket. The consistency of quality ran through all of the locations Vaughn visited.
“Over the next few months I made stops at other True Texas BBQ locations. I enjoyed a sliced brisket sandwich in Huntsville and the Frito pie in Magnolia,” stated Vaughn in his detailed account. “Rather than being hidden under a bunch of toppings, the morsels of roughly chopped brisket were the star on the stuffed potato in Killeen. The consistency was so impressive that I decided to check in on a few other well-known barbecue chains to test my growing sentiment that True Texas BBQ had seized the state’s barbecue chain championship belt.”
