It is clear by its name that the World Championship Cheese Contest is no small event, with tenured dairy purveyors from all over submitting their prized products for a possible title. So it took Alberto Sasson, President of Deca & Otto, by complete surprise when a friend at the contest reached out to let him know the team’s two entries had both been awarded—one had even taken the entire category!
“I think it’s a very important award for us, especially as it was our first time participating in the competition. We feel very honored and proud of what we are doing in Colombia, working very hard to achieve a gourmet-quality product. It was important to us to achieve this, and to do so next to so many well-known brands is a great privilege,” Alberto shares.
Deca & Otto’s Greek Yogurt earned gold in the Yogurt - All Other Milks category, not only taking the top title, but nearly scoring perfectly with the judges at an impressive 99.60.
The company’s Burrata came in 5th place in its category, also scoring high with a 96.20 overall.
What makes both products so individualistic is that they are made with the milk of 100 percent grass-fed Colombian buffaloes.
“Our Burrata is probably one of our star items,” Alberto shares. “People go crazy for it. We make it in-house by hand and it is one of the few of its kind on the market that is made with buffalo milk.”
Buffalo milk, he explains, has various health benefits that differentiate it from other milks on the market. Just a few of these include:
“Buffalo milk is rich, smooth, creamy, and gives all of our products a taste you and your customers will love,” Alberto continues.
As for the now gold medal-touting Greek Yogurt, it is available in Plain and six other flavors, including Strawberry, Dulce de Leche, Mixed Berries, Blueberry, Mango, and Honey.
“We are very proud to be one of the few Colombian companies manufacturing and importing buffalo dairy products to the U.S. As customers continue to learn about the benefits of buffalo milk compared to other dairy options, we are seeing more and more opportunities to meet growing demand,” Alberto tells me.
Already distributed through names like Atalanta, Deca & Otto products are often found in the stores known for premium product distribution, such as Publix, H-E-B, and Marianos, among others.
As this growth continues, the team has made small changes to its packaging and logo to mark its forward momentum.
“We strive to be good to the buffaloes that give us their milk, our farmers and cheese makers, and the environment. We are always looking for new ways that we can be better in all aspects. So, we will be launching new packaging that is similar to the premium pack we currently offer, but is more environmentally friendly, as well as an update to our logo,” Alberto explains.
This gourmet-quality dairy offering is available in much of the U.S. under the Deca & Otto label, as well as domestically in Colombia under the company’s Planeta Rica brand.
Congratulations to the Deca & Otto team on what I am sure is just the beginning of many recognitions!
